Lynnette Dickinson is the founder of A Spark of Splendour, with a mission to empower people to live in peace and share peace. The main activities of the business are yoga and meditation classes, and my book A Journey to Peace through Yoga.
Lynnette plans to expand teaching into seminars and retreats, for business and the general public, with a specialty in special needs; move into public speaking; and export her book into international markets. At this stage, Lynnette says that there is an unconfirmed potential for the book to be released into the UK market in March/April 2012.
Starting up the business
A Spark of Splendour naturally evolved out of teaching yoga and meditation as often as I could, then earlier this year (2011), the imminent publishing of my book motivated me to put a more formal structure into place. In addition, I have Multiple Sclerosis which makes working in a traditional workplace more difficult due to stamina and consistency difficulties.
Receiving a microcredit loan
I am hoping to achieve financial independence from disability payments to ensure a comfortable home for my three children.
Creating a sustainable business
The Microcredit loan has already enabled me to engage professional marketing advice to expand my business into public speaking and promote the sales of my book. Ultimately I would like to distribute my book as widely as possible and create an ongoing speaking career so I can offer the peace I have found through yoga and meditation, to a broad and diverse audience.
The Brilliant Idea Program
Every time I attend a session I learn something, but the most important learning has been to think about what I am doing as a business. I still have a long way to go until I am a business woman but I will and I am now looking forward to it.
Top tips
Start coming to the (Brilliant Idea) information sessions and formulating your business ideas, now, it doesn’t need to be perfect straight away because all businesses are a work in progress. Also get sorted with accounting before you start.
What next?
My first priority is to promote my book in Australia and do some more speaking engagements, then record a relaxation and meditation CD. Next year there are already possibilities of seminars in Melbourne, and I would like to investigate the possibilities of travelling to promote my book overseas and planning at least one retreat.
